At Home With Jordana Hazel & Basil

Step inside the NoHo Arts District home of photographer Jordana Hazel, where timeless design meets everyday family life — and a certain four-legged character steals the show. Jordana’s house is not just beautiful, it’s warm, lived-in, and full of personality, much like her beloved Basset Hound, Basil.

Together, they’ve created a space that balances charm and functionality, proving that good design and dog ownership can go paw in paw.

“We live in an up-and-coming area called the NoHo Arts District. We fell in love with the original parts of the house, the little nooks and crannies built in 1929. We’ve spent the last eight years renovating the 1970s and 80s additions and giving the house a more cohesive feel,” Jordana says.

Asked to describe the design aesthetic of her home, Jordana hesitates before saying, “A good friend once described it as a modern French flea market, but I’m not really sure! When I’m shopping, the first priority is that I love something; the second is that it makes our home a more comfortable place. I never buy things with an aesthetic or theme in mind; I just buy things that I love and it all tends to play together nicely!”

It is an approach that is clearly working. This is not a house, it is a home and it has a wonderful family feel. An interior made for living and enjoyment. Jordana loves to entertain and aims to have a house that is always warm and welcoming, where visitors can feel at home. Much of the furniture has been purchased at flea markets or on Craigslist and refinished or reupholstered. “Our home has a collected feel, full of comfortable pieces that are simply things we love.”

Jordana’s favorite room is undoubtedly the one in which we are sitting. The original long window was replaced with a three panel French door opening onto the garden. “This room gets amazing light that bounces off the white walls and gold ceiling. I can curl up in my desk chair to work and not feel like I’m chained to my desk because the space makes me so happy.”

Designing with Basil in Mind

Basil joined the family a year after they purchased the house. A beautiful Basset Hound, he was living in the East Valley Animal Shelter having been brought in after being hit by a car. They adopted him immediately. His arrival meant that many of the renovations have been undertaken with his needs in mind. Having a dog has proved a considerable challenge within a stylish home — the two biggest challenges being slobber and hair which gets everywhere.

“We selected wood floors for every room. The front of the house has the original wood — white oak — that has stood up pretty well. We’d done super dark floors in our bedroom renovation, and they showed every piece of fur and speck of dust. So when we started the downstairs renovation, we went with hickory as it’s even harder than the oak.

For furniture, I try to stick with neutral colors and bring in pops of color with pillows/blankets/rugs etc. Since Basil is black, white, and brown, there isn’t a great option for upholstery colors that hides the hair. But microfibers are easy to clean and have worked well for us!”

Basil has free reign throughout the house and he makes full use of this freedom. According to Jordana, “One of his favorite spots is a storage area in our guest bedroom. I’m always finding his hidden treasures buried in the blankets. His toys are kept in a basket in the living room to contain them. His food bowls are kept out of the way under an island overhang in the kitchen. We tried a dog bed for him, but he much prefers a chair in our bedroom.”

Welcoming a little one into a pet-loving household

With the arrival of daughter McCarty, even more attention has been paid to the floor areas. Basil has happily accepted McCarty and is very patient with her. “Floor time has probably been the most difficult transition with Basil. If he has a fault, it’s that he loves too much, and being at his level just means a lot of drool in both our faces!”

Not all the renovations have worked quite as Jordana expected, partly due to Basil’s sheer determination to get his own way.

Laughing, Jordana explains:  “We intentionally built the kitchen countertops slightly higher than average because, standing on his back legs, Basil can reach anything close to the edge. On occasion, he gets lucky and will still be able to grab a treat.

I routinely find food poorly buried in the back yard or nestled in the blankets of his favorite sleeping spots … Kind bars, bags of quinoa, anything that he knows he’s not supposed to have! I once left a chair too close to the counter and he treated himself to six fresh-from-the-oven blueberry muffins.”
