Meet Toby, Vancouver’s Four-Legged IG Star

If you spend any time scrolling through Instagram’s dog-loving corners, chances are you’ve stumbled across Toby — a Maltese from Vancouver who’s taken social media by storm with his witty costumes, hipster aesthetic, and undeniable charm. Known as “the Hipster Dude with Attitude,” Toby has cultivated a loyal following who can’t get enough of his antics, from bow ties to behind-the-ears scratches.

But who is Toby beyond the hashtags and hilarious photos? We sat down for a paw-to-paw chat with this internet sensation (through his ever-patient human, of course), and he didn’t hold back.

Who is Toby, anyway?

“I am a Maltese from Vancouver, Canada — also known on social media as the Hipster Dude with Attitude,” Toby begins. His friends, however, know him by a simpler moniker: “Tobes. My friends call me Tobes.”

At ten “pup years” — about 56 in human years — Toby is a seasoned star who still has the energy of a puppy. “I met my mom when I was 3.5 months old. At that time I was living with my furry mom and two sisters.” That was the beginning of his forever home — and his rise to fame.

Surprisingly, the spotlight isn’t something Toby spends much time thinking about. “No, not really. I’m more interested in food and naps. My favourite snacks are Havarti cheese and bison jerky.”

When he’s not being styled for Instagram, his daily schedule is enviable. “I spend most of my time eating, snacking, napping, going for car rides, going to the park, going for walks, and watching Netflix.” It sounds like the dream life, though there are occasional temptations along the way. “Goose poop. It’s the only gross thing I eat that I’m not supposed to eat. Mom always freaks out.”

As for toys, Toby is a puzzle aficionado. “Nina Ottosson and Outward Hound puzzle toys,” he says without hesitation. When it’s time to unwind, you’ll find him in his favorite hideaway: “In my teepee. I enjoy the privacy.”

Toby also knows how to keep his human guessing. “When I was 3.5 months old I managed to climb into one of the baskets in the bathroom. Mom freaked out because she thought I’d somehow managed to fall off the patio. Took her forever to figure out where I was hiding!”

Of course, no canine celebrity is complete without a signature look. Toby doesn’t disappoint: “My black thick-rimmed glasses, striped cardigan, fedora, and anchor bow tie.” A hipster ensemble worthy of its own magazine cover.

But behind the bow ties and photo shoots, Toby is still very much a dog — with strong opinions. On cats: “They scare me. And I think I’m allergic to them.” On affection: “Behind the ears. I also enjoy butt scratches. Is that too much info?” On leisure spots in Vancouver: “Any beach. I love the sand!”

He’s also got a healthy social life. “Yes, of course! But my best buds are Tobi, Cashew, Chloe, and Treo.” And what about romance? Toby blushes a little. “This might get me in some trouble. Yes, there is a Mrs. Dog. There’s actually quite a few Mrs. Dogs. Ok, let’s just leave it at that.”

Before we wrap, Toby has one final confession for his fans: “I’m not a morning dog. I prefer to sleep in until my assistant makes me get up to go for a walk.”

Whether he’s snoozing in his teepee, strolling Vancouver’s beaches, or rocking a fedora on Instagram, Toby is proof that dogs don’t just capture hearts — they keep us laughing while doing it. With his mix of humor, honesty, and hipster flair, it’s no wonder this “Dude with Attitude” has become one of the internet’s most beloved pups.
